Tuesday Tips and Techniques: Stop Worrying About Accuracy

Watching Shuang Li Watercolors' video workshop "Fearless Waterscapes" and one thing that is so great about Shuang is her emphasis on what matters and what doesn’t matter. And really, so much doesn’t matter. As artists, we cling to details. It’s often how we gauge success. Was it in the photo? How accurately did we recreate it in our painting? But Shuang shows how those things really don’t matter.

As she puts in her drawing free hand, she says, “Nothing is about accuracy. It’s about how you visually want to show the beauty of this area [the forest and water]. Anything else is not that important.” What a completely liberating idea.
